Literary Criticism

Literary criticism is when you interpret and evaluates a piece of literature. Its purpose is to decode what the author was trying to convey to the reader. What message/messages were they trying to transmit to us through the book? As a reader what can you learn or should not learn from it? One way I think a reader can answer this is if they ask themselves, well what time period was this text written? What was going on then? What was the author going through? What did the author experienced? What did the people experience?
In the book Catcher in the rye by J.D. Salinger the main character Holden Caulfield was a troubled teen who had been removed from three schools and then attended Pencey prep. He also got expelled from there as well and had to go back home to NYC. Although Caulfield was schedule to go on a certain day because of a brawl with his roommate he decides to leave a few days earlier, live in a hotel and not tell his parents until later. Then from there on he starts his journey. Throughout the whole book a similar motifs is notable. For instance like innocence (there is a quote where he asks a driver where do ducks go in the winter) and pain (over his younger brother Allie who died and witnessing suicide by one of his former classmates).Which may be the reason for his behavior throughout the book. Because of literary criticism we are able to comprehend much clearer as to why Caulfield reacts the way he does to his environment and not judge him immediately.Through the character you can also sometimes draw an assumption about the author’s persona as well. This is literary criticism.

New Journalism is a style of writing that was first used in the 1960s. It is a technique that is rarely used today, but can still be seen in certain magazine such as Rolling Stone, Elle, and Enquirer. In my opinion it should be used more often in current writings because it’s original. For example it tells a story using scenes, it uses dialogue instead of statements (this puts the reader in the middle of the conversation), it utilizes the narrator point-of-view about a particular scene or event, and lastly includes fictional techniques. But in spite of these few key points new journalism is not fiction. Instead it just wants know “how do YOU feel about that?”

Cubism is really important!!!

The art of Cubism has long been misunderstood and neglected throughout history by society. It is highly important to know how important this movement itself was and how for so long we have allowed it to be neglected by all writers and self proclaimed artists.Cubism did not remain long-lived or widespread, but we failed to understand that it played an important role by igniting the idea of creativity. This later on lead to an important explosion in art, lterature, and music of the 20th century which foolishly writers misunderstood.
